AUTISTIC PEOPLE SUPPORTERS IN TANZANIA (APSO)
Autistic People Supporters in Tanzania (APSO) is a non-governmental and non-profit organization dedicated to promoting Autism awareness and improving the quality of life for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families in Tanzania. Established by a group of committed and experienced youths from diverse sectors, APSO works to address the unique challenges faced by autistic individuals and their caregivers within the community.
Legal Framework
APSO is registered under the Non-Governmental Organization Act, No. 24 of 2002 (as amended), with the registration number 00NGO/R/5572 and Taxpayer Office Number 173-909-691.
Mission
The mission of APSO is to foster awareness, inclusion, and support for autistic individuals and their families, ensuring they can lead fulfilling lives free from discrimination and stigma.
Challenges Faced by Autistic People
Autistic individuals, particularly adults, encounter numerous challenges, including:
- Difficulties with advanced language skills, such as verbal reasoning, problem-solving, making predictions, and understanding others' perspectives.
- Struggles in initiating and maintaining social interactions, which impact education, employment opportunities, and social integration.
- Discrimination and stigma from the community, leading to limited access to care and support systems.
- Promote Autism awareness across communities in Tanzania.
- Advocate for the rights and inclusion of autistic individuals in education, employment, and social life.
